The Seventh Annual Gala

Each year APABA-CO hosts a Gala as a fundraising and awareness event at which we include speakers and cultural experiences in furtherance of our mission. Our annual gala is also a celebration of APABA-CO’s achievements and activities throughout the year. The Seventh Annual Gala will take place on October 22 , 2013 at 6:00PM.

Judicial Candidate Meet and Greet

The John Mercer Langston Bar Association, Women Lawyers of Franklin County, and the Asian American Pacific Bar Association of Central Ohio invite you to join us for a Judicial Candidate Meet and Greet on October 10, 2013. Minority Bar Association Meeting

Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity: “The George Zimmerman Verdict” (October 4, 2013): The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity is hosting a conversation with bell hooks regarding the George Zimmerman verdict, which spurred conversations nationwide about race, gender, discrimination and the law. The talk will be held Friday, October 4 at 130 Drinko Hall in Saxbe Auditorium from noon until 1 pm. Sharon Davies, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties professor at Moritz College of Law, will interview bell hooks and discuss the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin and the implications of the jury’s verdict.

 

APABA-CO Fourth Annual Picnic

APABA-CO will hold its 4th Annual Picnic on Sunday, September 8, 2013 from 12 – 3PM. The location this year is the South Shelter at Thompson Park (2020 McCoy Rd, Upper Arlington 43220).

This event has been a huge success in the past, and we are hoping for a great turn out this year as well! Family and significant others are encouraged to attend. There will be sports, entertainment, and other games, but feel free to bring whatever picnic-friendly things you have lying around in your basements or garages--footballs, volleyballs, corn hole sets, frisbees, etc. The event will be catered and vegetarian options will be available. Third Annual Family Picnic

APABA-CO invites you to enjoy some fresh air and sunshine (hopefully) at a Clippers' baseball game. The game will take place at Huntington Park in the Arena District on Thursday, August 30th, at 7:05pm. Tickets will be provided, along with $10 in Clippers Cash--good for food and beverages. APABA-CO and John Mercer Langston Bar Association present Lessons Learned: It's Not Too Late! Navigating the social and political atmosphere of a successful summer. Case Western's Third Annual Midwest APALSA Conference

Please consider attending Case Western's Third Annual Midwest APALSA Conference, which was recently approved by the Supreme Court of Ohio Commission on CLE Credit for 3.00 total CLE hours instruction. The conference entitled, "Building Your Niche: Creating a Professional Identity in Practice and Beyond," will feature close to twenty-five speakers who will encourage discussion on various areas of the law. Topics include: immigration, intellectual property, international business, in-house practice, public interest, and government. In addition, we will also have speakers with knowledge about public service loan forgiveness, effective networking, as well as a few who have utilized their law degrees to take alternative career paths.

This year, Ms. Wendy Shiba, the President-elect of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, will participate as our keynote speaker. Ms. Shiba is a Cleveland native and formerly was Senior Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and Secretary of PolyOne Corporation, headquartered in the Cleveland area. We hope that you will join us.

COSI RACE Exhibit

The Columbus Bar Association is hosting a great event this coming Tuesday, January 31, at COSI from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm. The event centers around the new exhibit, RACE: Are we so different?, which is set to open on January 28. From 4:00 - 5:00, there will be a panel discussion featuring Ben Espy, Carl Smallwood, and Professor Molinda Molina. Jennifer Adair, president of JMLBA, and David Dokko, VP of APABA-CO, will be moderating the discussion. Following the discussion will be drinks and hors d'oeuvres, along with a private viewing of the RACE exhibit. This, along with parking, is all included with the $25 ticket. When entering the parking lot, mention you are there for the CBA event, and you will be admitted without payment. Japan Relief Effort Fundraiser/Happy Hour

Our thoughts are with the people of Japan and our friends and family affected by the tragic earthquake and tsunami. The Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Central Ohio is sponsoring a fund-raiser/happy hour on Wednesday, March 30, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Bar 23, which is located on The Cap in the Short North. To help with immediate emergency relief and humanitarian efforts in Japan, we will be collecting donations at the door and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross.

In an effort to bring our community together, we are inviting APABA-CO members as well as other local organizations including the Young Asian American Professional Network, American Constitutional Society, Asian American Community Services, the John Mercer Langston Bar Association, and the Columbus chapter of the National Association of Asian American Professionals. However, all are invited and we appreciate your support for this worthy cause.

In order to maximize our fundraising efforts, APABA-CO will match the donations collected up to $500. There will be drinks and appetizer specials and small bites will be provided by APABA-CO. Bar 23 is located at 584 N. High Street.

Collaborative Charity Happy Hour

Please join APABA-CO, ACS Columbus Lawyer chapter, the CBA’s LGBT and Young Lawyers Committees for a collaborative charity happy hour on December 1, 2010 from 5PM to 7PM. The event will take place at Bar 23 located at 584 N High St, Columbus, OH 43215 in the Short North. There is a donation fee of $5.00 in order to receive reduced price on the drinks. APALSA - Judge Thapar @ Moritz

A Conversation on Sentencing

ABAPA-CO, ACS Columbus Lawyer chapter, the John Mercer Langston Bar Association and the Moritz Law student chapter of ACS are co-hosting an event entitled A Conversation on Sentencing on Monday, October 18, 2010 at 6:00PM. The event will take place at the Ohio State University Student Union. The discussion will be on the impact of the sentencing laws, the recent changes to the laws, and whether we will see any changes in the near future.
